When the Hanse Sail is over in Rostock, other waters are explored – for example in Rostock’s twin city Riga, where the Riga City Festival took place from August 16th to 18th.
Since 2011, the Baltic Sail Association annually hosts the Baltic Sail Nations Cup, a regatta on sailing boats between the member cities. Host city is traditionally the hometown of the last year’s winners.
The invitation to the 9th Baltic Sail Nations Cup followed four international sailing teams from, Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), Rostock (Germany) and Szczecin (Poland).
After a short training session on Saturday morning to get to know the sailboats (Laser SB20), the competition started at noon in match races. After a long day of races and extremely close matches, the results were finally clear: The team of Szczecin could win the first place in the very last second, host port Riga was second and the third place was shared by Rostock and Klaipeda.
Full of impressions and sporting experiences, the teams returned home on Sunday after paying a visit to the Riga City Festival. Johanna Busch, member of the German team, was thrilled:”One the one hand, it was extremely fun to sail these amazing boats. One the other hand, the exchange with people from other countries was so worthwhile! And Riga is an amazing city.”
Following the tradition, the 10th Baltic Sail Nations Cup 2020 will take place during the Dni Morza Festival in Szczecin, Poland, June 14th to 16th to which six teams are invited.
