On the occasion of the 20th Sail Gdansk, the Baltic Sail member cities Gdansk (Poland), Karlskrona (Sweden), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Nysetd in Guldborgsund (Denmark), Rostock and the new member Szczecin (Poland) renewed their commitment with a new partnership contract valid from 2017 until 2021.

Main aim of the partners is a common international marketing of the local harbour festivals as well as attraction of traditional ships to the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, all partners support the maintenance of traditional ships in operation. Joint projects on board of these ships which are for example supporting social training among people from different nations, are initiated and supported by Baltic Sail. There are other projects that have developed within the last 20 years.

The Haikutter-Race from Nysted to Rostock is the prelude of the Hanse Sail Rostock one day before the official opening the 2nd weekend of August every year.

Additionally, since 2009, a Match-Race, the so called Baltic Sail Nations Cup takes place in one of the partner cities. The 8th Baltic Sail Nations Cup starts on July 2nd at the 20th Sail Gdansk. There are teams from Rostock, Klaipeda, Riga, Guldborgsund and Gdansk that are competing against each other.

Sail-training-boats like „Santa Barbara Anna“ (from Rostock) and „Johann Smidt“ (from Bremen) set off from Rostock to Gdansk and took part a large parade during the Sail Gdansk.
